March 2024 Update

Great Abington Community Primary School

Continuing the partnership with Leys Sport

The ongoing collaboration between Leys Sport and Great Abington Primary School continues with Leys Sport providing specialist rugby, hockey, cricket and now netball coaching.

The Leys have committed to helping develop the outdoor learning space at Great Abington Community Primary School and were delighted to be invited to its opening. This was made possible with, a grant from the Community Fund at The Leys.

The Ollie Feast Trust

Ollie Feast Summer Camp

Over thirty Leys staff members, including nine incoming Upper Sixth students from The Leys volunteered their time during the summer holidays to run the Ollie Feast Summer Camp. The initiative is aimed to take young people out of their comfort zones by presenting them with new and exciting challenges to develop skills, build relationships and broaden their horizons and aspirations.

The participants, The Leys partnership schools (Trumpington Community College, North Cambridge Academy, Parkside Community College, and Chesterton Community College), engaged in various activities including canoeing on the River Cam, outdoor wall climbing and leadership command tasks. On the final day, GB Paralympian Roy Turnham delivered an inspirational talk and led taster blind football sessions for the pupils.

Support for Churches

The School supported the Minister and a member of the Common Room to do outreach in the community, such as administering of the last rites as well as weddings.

In addition, last September the School provided free defibrillator training for lay people in the Lordsbridge parishes.

School Boat Club

The Leys facilitated the transportation of boats belonging to local clubs to regattas in Peterborough and Henley, while also lending learner boats to several 'Learn to Row' initiatives involving year 8 pupils at Parkside and Chesterton Community Colleges.

Additionally, logistical support was provided to St Mary's School by transporting boats on the School trailer to the Schools' Head of the River Race in London.

The School boathouse site served as a launch point for numerous community clubs participating in the Cambridge Junior Sculling head race, and one of the School boats was lent to the East Anglia Rowing project 'Try Rowing' course for local state schools.

Environment Matters

The Leys flagship volunteering programme continues to make a strong contribution to the local area through a Personal Development and Leadership programme.

Lower Sixth pupils took part in Environmental Conservation volunteering at Trumpington Country Park, where they helped with planting a new orchard and maintaining the area for the benefit of the local community.

Pupils volunteered at Ditchburn Place care home and St George’s Court, either through in person visits and organising activities for residents or via a letter writing scheme.

There are multiple pupils helping in Charity Shops in the city and also at local primary schools helping to run after-school clubs.

Red Balloon

The Leys partnership with the Red Balloon Learning Centre continues. This school, which supports the most vulnerable, has benefited from the expertise of one designated member of staff who has continued to work closely with small groups and individuals providing them with 1:1 mentoring, coaching, trampolining, swimming, and climbing wall experiences. In addition this this, specialist expedition and resources as support was given for their first Duke of Edinburgh's Award Expedition.

The Leys also rehomed recycled iPads and two laptops together with on-going technical IT support and training to ensure effective and safe use of the technology.
